HIV ELISA & HIV DNA PCR
The most common HIV test is the HIV ELISA, or Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay. Although there are many alternative methods used to carry out this test, AMH always provides high-quality, laboratory based testing. AMH suggests that you use caution when using some alternative testing procedures. These tests are not created equally. Some tests have been linked to a higher frequency of false positives. In some cases, as with the highly publicized 2004 recall of “Discreet” HIV Test Kits, it is possible for the kits to completely fail to detect infection. According to the Federal Trade Commission, “Kits advertised as 99.4% accurate had error rates of 59.3%”
For more information about the popular “20 minute” rapid test, please call 866-926-4669. We can provide information and tell you if there are testing locations in your area.
The AMH HIV EIA is only collected and processed by a CLIA approved National Laboratory System. Collections can usually be arranged the same day you call. Locations and result times vary so please call for information.
Window Period: The recommended waiting time for this test is 3 months. In some cases, individuals may need to wait more than three months, post exposure. In many cases, a negative result on a test taken before 3 months is considered reliable but not definitive. Individuals with a more recent exposure, immune deficiency, or current or recent pregnancy should consider the HIV DNA PCR.
HIV DNA PCR: The HIV Proviral DNA by Polymerase Chain Reaction is a highly sensitive method used to detect recent exposure to HIV. The PCR technique, a Nobel Prize winning technology, achieves this sensitivity by synthetically amplifying virus segments. The test can identify infection shortly after exposure, and can be a useful tool before 28 days, but is not considered conclusive until 28 days post exposure. Currently there are no tests in existence that can definitively rule out exposure before 28 days.
