Clinical Use
Traditional screening test to identify or rule out HIV infection. Can be ordered individually or as part of a comprehensive STD testing.
HIV Transmission
Transmission of HIV usually occurs through, but is not limited to, exposure to infected blood, semen, vaginal secretions, and/or breast milk.
Window Period
6-12 weeks. At 12 weeks, the test is considered conclusive. However, an individual with a suppressed immune system can take longer to develop a detectable immune response and may consider direct viral detection by HIV DNA PCRmethodology.
CDC Recommendations:
Men who have sex with men (MSM), intravenous drug users, and other high-risk individuals should be tested at least annually.
Pregnant women should be tested for HIV.
